Randy Pobst: Front-wheel-drive understeers? Think ...

Entrance-wheel drive understeers, proper? Everyone is aware of that. Don’t you?

However wait, did you ever drive a 1988 CRX? Ever see PD Cunningham in one in every of his RealTime Racing Acura Integra Rs? I positive did, within the windshield and the mirrors of my Tri-Level Engineering Mazda6 again within the good ol’ days of World Problem Touring Automobile competitors. No push.

[Restoring one of the most iconic Acura Integra Type Rs]

Truth is, they don’t should. Why would they? Commonplace reply is all that weight on the entrance, proper?

Nicely, simply grasp on a minute. Isn’t that weight why they’re good within the snow or rain? Why wouldn’t that work within the dry, too? And Randy, aren’t you all the time preaching about weight administration? How does transferring weight and cargo to 1 finish of the automobile or the opposite make it stick higher, not worse?

Have I acquired you considering? Any driving teacher value their sunburn will advise you to not raise all of a sudden in a nook ’trigger it throws weight ahead and makes the rear mild. If weight improves grip in entrance whenever you raise in a nook, why wouldn’t it harm grip within the entrance of a automobile, particularly a FWD?

Nicely, I’ll inform ya one of many primary causes: as a result of nearly all front-wheel-drive vehicles have the identical dimension tires throughout. Yep, take into consideration that. What are the tires sizes on highly effective rear-drive vehicles, particularly mid- or, God forbid, rear-engine vehicles? The identical? Hay-yull no. Some examples: 2024 Porsche 911 GT3 has 255/19 fronts, 315/20s rears; Ferrari SF90 will get 255/20 fronts, 315/20 rears. Now let’s come right down to earth: Mustang GT Efficiency Bundle has 255/19 fronts and 275/19 rears.

Toyota GR86? 215s all ’spherical. Yeah, it’s balanced. FWD is not.

It is sensible to dimension the tire to the load, and that’s the place the front-drives get in hassle. These are all road vehicles, so the place does many of the load go whenever you add individuals and baggage? Yep, on the rear. So for secure, full-load dealing with, a FWD wants sufficient rear rubber to deal with it. Security ruins the enjoyable–once more.

[Wheel width: Is wider always better?]

And what in regards to the CRX and race vehicles I discussed? These vehicles have been required to run the identical dimension on all 4 corners, so all of them used the trick of rear steer. In 1988, Honda launched an totally superb suspension designed to reduce the understeer usually present in FWD–and of their low-priced each day driver Civics. Man, I liked them for that. It went away a pair generations later–simply too costly. However wow, in ’88 we acquired an unimaginable rear trailing arm that fastidiously steered the rears out.

On our Mazda6 race vehicles, we may transfer rear mounting factors to create the identical impact. With the rear steer, we may soften the rear springs rather a lot. Getting on the gasoline would then switch weight again, squat the suspension, and use the designed-in bumpsteer to toe out just a little and drive off the nook with minimal understeer. Magic! Thanks, Craig Nagler and Tri-Level.

As a result of a front-wheel drive delivers the facility to the entrance tires solely, to be balanced on throttle, it needs to be just a little tail-happy off throttle. However that is excellent for aiming on the apex on the best way into the nook. Get it proper, and it’s very quick and even enjoyable to look at. (Once more, watch these outdated RealTime Acuras.)

However these methods are actually simply steering round the actual concern: The entrance tires ought to be larger than the rears on FWD. Similar to a Porsche however backward. Dimension the tire to the load. Logical.

Simply bear in mind that if you happen to throw wider fronts on there, your automobile will most likely oversteer rather a lot since you’ve been working stiff springs and bars and different methods for these not-ideal same-size tires.

Increasingly more, I’ve seen this setup within the trendy world. And if you happen to can’t change wheel or tire dimension? Pump up the rear pressures to intentionally scale back grip and drive the automobile to be extra balanced. Free and efficient.

So keep in mind, front-drives positively do not should understeer.

All I’ll say is watch Minis ruuning at  Goodwood

In reply to Tom1200 :

Mini guys would put casters rather than the rear wheels if the foundations allowed it.

As famous, the Mini’s are an awesome instance of this.  I as soon as requested a man about his mini, and the way you retain it from continually understeering.  He mentioned: “I could make it oversteer as a lot as I need if I set it up proper”

Having performed some sim racing with racing Mini’s, these issues are looser than….

Blair’s philosophy on FWD automobile set-up…

“The entrance third of the automobile is what issues, the 2nd is the place you sit, the third is a trailer the foundations sadly require you to tow across the course”

“The principles drive you to have 4 tires, use all of them”

The world goes away from 1000lb rear springs and urinating canine nook entry poses however nonetheless see too many vehicles being fought round autox programs arrange that manner.

My neon that was arrange for rallycross is a superb driving automobile on the dust it oversteers simply sufficient to be very nice. By far one of the best entrance wheel drive automobile that I’ve ever pushed I am very lucky to have been in a position to expertise it

In reply to Colin Wooden :

God I miss Speedvision…

Maybe I do want to offer FWD an opportunity. I simply havent pushed one with sporting pretense a lot.

  1. 1991 Pontiac Grand Am (clapped out TURD)
  2. 2003 Chevy Malibu (low mileage instance, respectable energy, however meh)
  3. 2006 Mazda5 (cant say I chuck that round a lot)

and one autocross run in celica that had received Solo Nationals…  but it surely was a small lot and the automobile was on snow tires…  Sure, Sure I may make it oversteer. Or Understeer…  Or full sideways all wheel drift…

I first seen FWD (as others have mentioned above) in an outdated Mini {that a} cousin classic raced at Blackhawk Farms and Highway America.  So thanks for introducing a dose of actuality.  Or is affirmation bias “the droid I search”?wink

YouTuber and (former?) racer Brian Makse usually concludes his movies with “and keep in mind, vehicles do not understeer by themselves.”

In reply to pilotbraden :

I recall speaking to guys who raced in a neon spec sequence when the vehicles have been new and I requested “what are you doing to get that oversteer on the market?”

One man merely mentioned “we’re all working about 60psi on the rear tires.”

I believed “welp, that’ll do it.” smiley

Discover that the rear steer used to cut back understeer gives toe OUT. Extra proof that your trackside information is incorrect.
